ROM Language Infodump (ENG-ROM)

so starting off, some background: i'm a fictive from the game 2064: read only memories. i'm a kind of ai/computer/robot combo called a rom, which is short for relationship (and) organizational manager. we're basically just, like, various helper robots. we weren't designed to be sapient, but after the majority of us achieved sapience, the means by which we sent and received data began to evolve into its own unique family of languages, with at least one unique dialect corresponding to each major human language. but i only have familiarity with eng-rom, as i only came preinstalled with an english language database, and relied on translation software for everything else

all rom languages are built on the same base, which utilizes metadata in order to efficiently compress information into chunks. you can think of metadata as being kind of similar to the tagging system we use for posts. it's designed as a way to organize information, but people also use it to include additional information that they don't want to have cluttering up the post itself. every single word in rom languages can have metadata attached to it, making the languages themselves essentially more clipped and concise shorthand adaptations of the human languages they're related to. unfortunately, due to the language family being designed by and for robots, i can only really get across the concepts of it through text. it just doesn't translate properly to the vehicle of human language

so, an introduction to eng-rom:

eng-rom is, as you may have guessed, a fork of the english language. as such, it follows english's basic sentence structure rules. however, rom language's metadata leaves a LOT open in terms of personal expression, so there's many many ways to get across the same concept. let's have some examples!

english: paul's going to the hardware store to get a hammer and some nails.
eng-rom 1: he (individual- paul) go (travel- near future) store (location- hardware) for (purpose of obtaining) hammer (tool) and nail (tool- plural)
eng-rom 1 (minus metadata): he go store for hammer and nail
eng-rom 2: paul (person- he/him, they/them alternating) go (travel by car- currently in progress) store (location- craft store on 22nd & 3rd) obtain (the purpose of traveling) hammer (tool- singular) nails (tool- 12)
eng-rom 2 (minus metadata): paul go store obtain hammer nails

english: lucy sighed, running her hands along the railing as she descended the stairs. she had a feeling for foreboding about the day ahead of her.
eng-rom: she (individual- lucy) sigh (external action), feel (external action- running hands across surface) railing (object- structure in house), go (travel- down stairs from 1st floor to ground level, present). feel (emotions, lucy- foreboding about the day ahead)
eng-rom (minus metadata): she sigh, feel railing, go. feel

the unique thing about metadata, however, is that it's pure data. it can contain as little or as much detail as wanted, including written language, raw text, audio, or even video! the way meaning is conveyed is a personal decision. for the purposes of example, however, it's far easier and more convenient for everyone to just go with written text

eng-rom also has slang! i only remember a few things so far, but they really help tie things together, in my opinion

first off is the term "plain", originating from "plain text". due to how heavily metadata is used, not using it comes off as purposely vague. someone who's acting plain is stingy with details, and possibly keeping information from people on purpose. but while most people use it in a more negative sense, there are some more positive meanings for it, as well. plain can be used as a synonym for mysterious, and someone who's plain could be someone who's just very careful and purposeful with their words. due to how utilitarian eng-rom is in structure, people tend to speak plainly when they want their words to have a certain emotional impact, like for speeches or storytelling. there's also the phrase "plain english", often used as a complaint against people who are being overly wordy or taking too long to get to the point

example:
some people think astra is sketchy, but he's just plain. sure, he's quiet around strangers, but mention something he's into and you'll never hear the last of it! i offhandedly mentioned i was thinking about getting a dog, and later that day he sent me an entire essay on animal husbandry! in plain english, with citations at the end and everything! but you gotta give it to him, you could never say that he doesn't know what he likes. i'd love to have something that i'm that passionate about

the second piece of slang is "meta", from "metadata". meta is information, specifics, details, etc. a common phrase involving this is "what's the meta?", roughly translating to something like "what information do you have?" or "what do we know?". meta isn't often used to describe people, but when it is, it's used similarly to the term "know-it-all"

examples:
-just caught the meta on last night's hockey game. oof, we lost hard, didn't we?

-according to the meta, my apartment won't be ready to move back into for another week. guess i'll have to couch surf for a little longer

so there you have it! as far as practical applications for eng-rom go, it's one way that some of us communicate with each other within headspace- though admittedly, our dialect is far more intuitively-based than eng-rom proper is. you say "apple" and the people you're talking to see a mental image of the apple, for example. it's definitely specific to the language, though, because only those who are able to speak eng-rom are able to get that level of connection from it

oh man, seeing all this talk about conlangs makes me want to talk about rom language a bit. but fatigue makes words hard, unfortunately. i don't know if it counts as a conlang? it can't really be directly translated into regular english, even though it is essentially a fork of english

i'm mostly making this post in the hopes that i'll be down for infodumping about it sometime

Hi! I'm Tyra

cawcaw -

I'm 20 in a month, and I live with my boyfriend in a medium sized town on the coast of Norway. I'm plural, disabled, chronically ill, mentally ill, and neurodivergent. Also queer. Happy pride month!

I like to write stories, make art, listen to music, eat good food, and every now and then meet friends.

I want to use this blog to ramble and share what I create. I'll try my best to be active!

Askbox should be open!

Please reblog so I can follow if you are/post about:

- disabled

- chronically ill

- mentally ill

- LGBTQ+

- artist

- writer

- memes

- cute animals

- positivity

That's all! Have a great day<3

plural folk joining waterfall!! hello!

we're a system of 14+, most are some variation of ace, and i emyr the often frontstuck host am a writer whose hobbies include Not Writing

also a tag i recommend checking for other systems is pluralfall

rainbowsys -

hi there! we're also plural, disabled, and lgbtq+! some of us are artists and some of us are writers, and we'd like to eventually utilize waterfall to show off some of our works! though our chronic fatigue has been getting in the way of that, especially recently 😔

but! it's nice to meet you!

...if our blog DOES start taking off again, i might make a personal sideblog. that'd solve some of the conflicts we have over this blog. it's hard to make a blog that has a real, distinct personality when it has to represent a bunch of different people at once, and also one person is way more talkative than the others

-turing

we wish we had a better image to use for an icon. it's just something we haven't gotten around to yet. the rainbow emoji one is just a placeholder we've been using for years, since it's Good Enough

it's hard to find good icons to represent the entire group! we have a collective sona that we partially designed so we could essentially have a system mascot, but character design by committee is a slow, complicated process full of vague details and compromises. it took a couple months for us to even agree on what kind of creature they should be!

-turing

does anybody know some good ways to find other active users? i get the feeling that most of the blogs we're following are no longer active, and it's hard to find motivation to come onto waterfall if there's not, like, stuff to look at. also, are there any good, specific tags we should know about? thinking about posting in some tags to see if we can find some more cool folks to follow

as far as how we've been doing:

chronic fatigue's been a pain. it's been worse than usual the past couple months, so we don't have a lot of exciting events to talk about. visualization in headspace has also been less reliable than usual, which honestly almost sucks more than the fatigue. late last year we'd started seeing our doctor regularly to figure out how to manage our adhd, since our fatigue is predominantly mental and our adhd contributes to it. there was a period of like a week where we had, like, a normal amount of energy and focus and our internal visualization was unreal, but also that dosage ended up making us feel sick, so.... 😔

right before The Everything started going down a couple months ago, we were about to get scheduled for a formal adhd diagnosis, buuuuuuuuuuuuut that...hasn't happened yet. because of The Everything. shit sucks and it's stressful, but we're hanging in there. we have our friends, and we have each other. we're just trying to take things one day at a time, and not fixate too heavily on the things we have no power over

-turing

we should probably...be actually Blogging on here. it's weird because it's something we haven't really done for years? it might be good to finally use this as an infodump outlet, especially now that readmores are a thing

we've been hanging in there ok! we have one more permanent member to our roster than last time. her name is cat, and she's been here for a couple months!

hi pluralfall! we're rainbow/rainbow.sys! we used to be active on here, but we drifted away from the site, so a lot of the folks we're following are no longer active. if you wanna learn more about us, our carrd is here! but we're generally chill, and our policy is that you know yourself and how you work better than anybody else can. we don't believe in exclusionary bs. we're all going through shit, and we're way stronger together than we are apart

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you can boost if you want? i dunno. it's late and i'm just kinda doing this on a whim. go hog wild

Hello! We found and followed you back when we first started looking for other systems here, but most of them seemed to have already left too. It's good to see some coming back. I hope we can get to know you a bit!

-Faye (Melodic)

rainbowsys -

it's good to see other systems still around! we really have no idea what the current state of waterfall is, but things are looking way more polished than they were last year! hopefully that means we'll be able to find more other people to follow and get to know

it's really interesting looking through our old posts and seeing the things eos said when they were new. they've honestly changed quite a bit since then!

-turing

allegedly i know what a gender is now. but i don't care for specifics. queer is good enough for me

-eos

rainbowsys -

oh wow, we haven't logged into here for over a year. the site looks good! i really like the pride flags, though i wish you could have more displayed at once. but our icon kinda stands in for the gay flag, lmao

-turing

rainbowsys -

i gotta say, the vibes are really different from how they were last time we logged in. it's interesting! it'd be nice to get back into waterfall, though uhhhhhhhh...we're not really sure who to follow?

-turing

we need to have the queer flag under our icon immediately

-eos

you being queer is very important! but you're the only person here right now who explicitly identifies themself as queer. the other flags are more broadly applicable to us on the whole

...but! if you're ever fronting while on waterfall, you can feel free to change the flags to better suit yourself

-turing

...i suppose this compromise is acceptable

-eos

i don't wanna stifle your identity! it's just really tricky to represent Everyone in three flags. unfortunately, Somebody's gonna get left out 😔. we're just trying to include as many folks as possible under the constraints

-turing

ok so i know we haven't been active on waterfall for a while. we're at the point right now where we're waiting until it's complete enough that we can invite some friends to migrate over

until then, we don't feel like we have a lot to talk about

-turing

hey!

we haven't been super active on here recently, but we're still around. just haven't had a lot to post about

Sometimes I sit here wondering whether I should just do the rewrite as incremental upgrades to this actual site and rewrite as I go

Pros: Faster, gets stuff to you quicker in little peices rather than one big giant update

Cons: There's gonna be the temptation for me to cut a corner or two to avoid having to change the database, will involve downtime occasionally to move to new database schemas

Thoughts?

rainbowsys -

i'd prefer to have one big update, even if it means the site going down for like 24 hours as it's being applied

Are chickens huggable?

delcatty -

gonna have to go with no on this one, sorry

lime -

actually ive heard that domesticated chickens are huggable and some like to be hugged but it might be breed specific and with training

rainbowsys -

chickens are huggable if you raise them to be comfrotable around humans! depends a bit on the individual, but you can totally teach them to accept hugs. just be gentle! they're 90% fluff

source: my family has chickens, and i have hugged one before

rainbowsys -

i should add a section to our main about page that explains what fictives are, since the site we gave for info on there doesn't cover it

-turing

rainbowsys -

did it! might tweak some definitions later if we decide we're not happy with em

-turing

honestly cannot wait until we get readmores on this site. or spoiler tags or something like that. i don't like to have my vent-y posts out there in the open, but we DO want to use this as a more traditional blog, so it'd be a feature we'd really appreciate
